Evil Dead Burn

After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws. As one by one they transform into deadites, she comes to discover that the vows she took in life - survive even in death.

If you just watch the trailer you do not get to experience how awful the characters are or the miserable way they ended the film. I rewatched all the other Evil Dead films in anticipation of this one and spoiler for those reviews but this is my least favorite Evil Dead film by some margin.

Enough lets get into it.

The opening was interesting with its connection to Evil Dead Rise’s opening, chronologically the latest event in that movie. There is a part where the deadite is floating with the top half of their head above the water, which I think might be the creepies scene in the movie.

Not a fan of the power creep on the deadites, as the part where she is boiling the lake was a bit much. I get that this is a silly horror movie but this does not, for me anyway, fit with Evil Dead. I actually cannot think of a horror franchise where this makes sense in the world of the film.

The family is insufferable from the start. This family is bordering on Rob Zombie family annoying and that is hard to do. If it were not for the makeup you may have a hard time telling when they are deadites and when they are not. Being rid of this family at the end seems like a good outcome for the protagonist.

Did not appreciate the self harm. The gun exists entirely for a deadite to commit self harm and I did not need that at all.

Did not appreciate the grandmothers dimentia played for laughs. They thought they were being clever having the deadite repeat the same thing later in the movie but it was not clever or funny. I think Evil Dead can be mean spritied at times as a franchise but not in these ways.

Deadites on a mission. What if the demonic evil needed to find a mcguffin? This was so not necessary and changed their behavior so much the movie was worse for it. Ten minutes of people just being thrown around was not a fun action sequence it was repetitive and after a few minutes it was boring. Also, early in the movie the naration from the grandfather says they will smell the dagger but later they need to be told. It is one thing for the deadites to trick people pretending not to be possessed it is another to avoid taking over the mom for reasons that are unclear to me.

Deadite rules. This is not a serious franchise but the inconsistency with the rules here for the deadites is a little confusing. The grandma is changed almost immediately but the mom hangs out for a while and almost chooses again to become a deadite. I suspect there is something here about her being complicit in the disfunction of the family but I do not like it.

Best character and deadite is gone too soon. The younger brother’s girlfriend is the best character and the best deadite and she is not in the movie enough. The writers, I assume, did not have the same asshole requirement for this character so she seemed pretty normal as a person. The deadite version was more like traditional deadites so she was the most fun of the ones in this movie.

Best things in the movie are in the trailer. Modern trailers are like this but I still watch them and hold out hope that they saved some thing good. They did not.

The abomination of a CGI ending was really disappointing to me. For a franchise that has historically dones some really creative practical special effects it was such a let down. I am onboard for the end being all red like Evil Dead (2013) and it be from a fire and not raining blood. The monster (was it even a deadite), came out looking like The Mummy. This was not scary or funny, it was goofy. Again a bit of a wet fart of an ending here.

The after credit scenes were a mixed bag. Grandma on the side of the road, with no legs, would not get me out of my car. I can ask if she is okay without leaving my vehicle thank you. That one was fine. The second one where they bring back a deadite from Evil Dead Rise for no good reason was bad. We do not seem to have any rules anymore which undercuts the events from previous films.

I watched this film twice and I think it will be a long while before I watch it again.
