Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise movie poster

A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

The movies opening is a lot of fun with a bit of a fakeout for the rest of the movie if you are going in blind. Starting at a similar setting to what we are use to and changing it up is a nice touch.

I like the change in setting. I think being in an apartment building can be isolating and they did a good job at least having some characters try to talk to people on the outside. The family dynamic was a change for the franchise but I thought it was handled well.

Spoilers ahead!

I HATE the earthquake. Not because it is an earthquake necessarily but mostly because how bad it looks. Based on where they are at and the building being in disrepair I can absolutely see an earthquake causing some damage. The cinematography and the effects did not help it at all.

I liked the family dynamic. The actors, including the kids, did a good job. Not everyone will agree with this assessment but that is okay. Often kids in movies can be annoying and I did not think they were. Once the mom becomes a deadite she is given some fun lines and that is one of the best parts of these horror comedy movies. The mom in this movie is great and so is the main protagonist.

The ending is a bit underwhelming unfortunately. I think Evil Dead (2013) will continue to be a hard act to follow in that regard. This movie references other movies in the franchise without drawing attention to them which I feel like this is an efficient movie in the sense that it does not try to do too much and everything it does is with purpose.

There are some split diopter shots in this film which I thought ended up looking really creepy. There is an uncany characteristic to them that was something fun in this setting. I enjoy this film and I watch it every so often.
