A Website Update
A recurring theme returns with yet another website update. This time focusing on legibility and professionalism. I made a point setting out some specific goals to ensure progress is made in an intentional way.
First, I wanted to increase the legibility of text on the site. This is achieved by swapping fonts. The font Hatori Hanzo font face is replaced by Libre Franklin. Increasing both the size of the font and the line height. While also decreasing the width of long form text. This along with maintaining a good amount of contrast between the text and the background.
Second, was repurposing and incorporating theme changes in a way that a casual viewer of the site will interact with and enjoy. Previous versions of the site had a theme switcher in the footer that was unlikely to be used. Each post type now has a badge with a unique color that once you navigate to the post applies a theme to the site.
The site still maintains both a light and dark mode for general pages as well as the uniquely themed post pages based on type. Light or dark is set based on user settings but can be toggled by the new theme switcher in the main navigation header.
Third, I wanted the site to be more professional. While my professional experience was mentioned in the hero image and was part of the main navigation there was no call to action. The call to action now exists in the form of a button in the hero section that takes you to the resume page. The page has been reworked to look more like a resume including a skill section and timeline flow.
The site in general lacked some polish. I liked the buttons I created but they always just seemed a bit off. For the purposes of the landing and basic navigation of the site I want to stick to conventions.
I do fear that I've gone too far in the other direction that the site seems a bit generic. I do not have any real brand identity here and I think there is a need to add some personality back in down the road. That should be easier to do now that some standards have been applied and the first focus on legibility has been achieved.
I need to update the to-do because this work just inspired more changes.
