Obsidian Git Setup

 read in about 1 minute

I need to start writing more things down. I often have things I want to accomplish on my mind and walk through a doorway only to forget entirely what I was thinking about (the doorway effect).

For a longtime I’ve used notion as a second brain and journalling. Lately though they’ve added a bunch of AI stuff and I haven’t been enjoying using their service as much.

So, I thought I would try out Obsidian. I’ve seen a number of posts online discussing how much people enjoy the product so I figured I would give it a go.

So far it has really helped me establish a daily practice of at least documenting a few things about my day. I’ve also used it as the place to log job applications I submit. The nice thing there is I can have weekly documents about the job search and use tools to pull larger reports.

As much as I enjoy the tool I’m not taking on more subscription services at the moment so I wanted to find a way to sync my phone and desktop vaults. I came across this reference and managed to set it up with my particular use case. I have an iPhone and my desktop is running linux. I used iSH to get this setup initially but the git extension for obsidian works once that is done. I’ve not had to use iSH since.

Now my vault is a git repo that I’m able to push from both my phone and desktop to codeberg. I do have to remember to do this but it’s hardly any more complicated than hitting save on a file. Nice to know that while most tutorials would use github other git services are viable here.

Once I got the syncing down I went ahead and did somc customizations setting a different theme, adding templates, and syncing raindrop as well.
