I had previously written about this back in August but this site has since then had a toggle between light and dark mode in the footer. In light mode it would present a ☀️ and in dark mode it would show a 🌙.
This worked fine but I could never really get into having emoji there frankly. I do not want to go all Holden Caulfield on you but using them made me feel like a bit of a phony. I may react to a text with a 👍 or a ❤️ but I’m not usually much of an emoji person.
Another limitation of having just a toggle is there is a limitation around how many options you can have. Typically you would want only two as having a cycling toggle isn’t the most user friendly experience.
I have been enjoying a few personal pages that are in black and white and wanted to experiment with that for my site as well. With the toggle in its previous state I was not sure how to incorporate that in a way that I liked. I’ve seen a few other people incorporate drop downs but I wanted something more persistent.
Eventually I ended up deciding on circles within a rounded rectangle shape. This sort of shape is already on the site as the way tags are presented so it did not seeme like an entirely new element to add to a relatively minimalist page.
I knew I wanted to add a black page with white text as I tend to gravitate toward dark mode presentations anyway. Just to keep things even I did go ahead and do a white page with black text. I don’t use #000 or #FFF but I do think I could have made the black darker and the white lighter. We will just have to see how I feel about it in the future.
I did finally add some content to the changelog which is good since I keep forgetting I created the page and added it to the footer for some reason without any information.
